Mukkuttram

Mukkuttram

Mukkuttram (Gymnemate Sylvester), also known as Gudmar, Madhunashini, and Chikani, is an evergreen, perennial, woody climber found primarily in tropical regions of India, Australia, and Africa. It has long been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine for the treatment of diabetes. Mukkuttram contains steroids and saponins which may be involved in the production of insulin and lipid-lowering properties, anti-inflammatory activity, and blood sugar control. Studies have shown a positive correlation between Mukkuttram and the hypoglycemic activity due to its ability to stimulate insulin production, and its ability to reduce glucose absorption in the intestine. Mukkuttram leaves help regulate insulin and glucose levels and reduce the amount of glucose in the blood of diabetic patients. A decoction made from the leaves is used to treat diabetes as it helps to improve glucose tolerance, increases insulin sensitivity and lowers cholesterol. It also helps suppress hunger and craving for sweets. Mukkuttram has also been used to treat other ailments such as Obesity, Asthma, constipation, sores, poor digestion, weakness, and fever. The leaves can also be used topically on wounds to aid in the healing process. They are said to possess wound healing, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Mukkuttram is commonly consumed in the form of tea, powder, and extract in traditional medicine, and can also be found in supplements. While side effects are rare, people should always talk to their doctor before taking this supplement, particularly those with chronic health conditions.
